Jean sometimes talked about how she was an immigrant; born in China in 1945, her father died while she was very young and she joined her mother's new family (second marriage) in the UK in 1957. The family had fun with a reel-to-reel tape recorder from about 1960 and eventually a few recordings were transferred to a cassette. Last year, Jean asked me to find the cassette and I eventually discovered it in the garden shed, where I think it was kept to ensure it didn't get taped over or thrown away. Jean didn't have a chance to hear the tape, but it is remarkable to hear her singing in Chinese at a time when she was still getting used to her new life.
